Remote Learning Checklist for Workshop Attendees

Days Prior to Class
- Install required software from the class reminder, and contact RCS if problems.
- Verify Zoom your installation and recommended settings.
- Set up a 2nd monitor, if possible.
- Test your microphone & video with another person.
- Notify the instructor if you have accessibility concerns.
Day of Class
- Ensure your location is conducive for learning: no noise, no background distractions, good lighting, and comfortable.
- Practice using Zoom the features you’ll use in class:
- Gallery vs. speaker view
- Mute and unmute yourself
- Opening and using the chat
- Opening and using the Attendees window
- Raising and lowering your hand
- Sharing your screen, and stopping sharing
- Practice arranging your windows to best follow the workshop – side-by-side may work best.
You’ll need:
- The Zoom window
- Your working window (RStudio, terminal, browser)
- (Optionally) Class materials window
- Let the instructor know if you wish to be paired with a colleague for exercises.
At and During Class
- Set ‘At Work’ boundaries: sign on door, Do Not Disturb on chat, phone, etc.
- Reboot your computer, if possible.
- Close all unrelated applications and non-essential web browser tabs.
- Please use your video – non-verbal communication is important.
- Ensure your video’s displayed name is meaningful.
- Mute audio except when talking.
- Speak clearly and be specific when referring to problems, windows, etc.
- Use chat, raise hand, or instructor’s preference for questions and obtaining help.
- Don’t be afraid to contribute your ideas and assistance (e.g in chat).
- Finally, have fun!
End-of and After Class
- Please fill out the in-class survey.
- Review the class materials and exercises to ensure you understand the lessons.
- Contact RCS if you have further questions.
- Please fill out 1-month follow-up survey (1 question!).
